How much internet speed do you need for IPTV?

The honest answer is lower than most people expect. Here is what each quality level actually needs, and why a stable 30 Mbps beats an unstable 200 Mbps.

IPTV needs less bandwidth than most people assume. The number that matters is not the speed on your bill, it is the speed you get consistently at eight o'clock on a Saturday evening.

Speed by quality

QualityPer streamComfortable
SD3 Mbps5 Mbps
HD (720p)8 Mbps12 Mbps
Full HD (1080p)12 Mbps18 Mbps
4K / Ultra HD25 Mbps35 Mbps

These are per stream. Two people watching 4K on separate devices need roughly 50 Mbps between them, and that is before anything else in the house uses the connection.

Why stability beats speed

A 200 Mbps line that drops to 5 Mbps for two seconds every minute will buffer constantly. A steady 30 Mbps line will not. Live television cannot pre-load minutes in advance the way Netflix does, so brief dips show up immediately as a pause.

This is why a wired connection makes such a difference. Wi-Fi is fast on average and unreliable in the moments that matter.

How to test properly

  1. 1Run a speed test at the time you normally watch, not in the middle of the morning.
  2. 2Test on the device you actually stream with, not your phone next to the router.
  3. 3Run it three or four times across an evening and look at the lowest figure, not the best.
  4. 4If you can, test wired and on Wi-Fi to see the gap.

If your lowest evening reading is above 25 Mbps on the streaming device itself, your connection is not the limiting factor.

What about mobile data?

4G and 5G both handle IPTV well — often better than poor home broadband. Be aware of your data allowance: an hour of 4K uses roughly 7GB, an hour of HD about 3GB.

If your connection clears the figures above and you still get buffering, the problem is somewhere else. Our Firestick buffering guide works through the usual causes in order.

Frequently asked

Is 30 Mbps enough for IPTV?

Yes, comfortably, for a single 4K stream or two HD streams. Problems at that speed usually come from Wi-Fi instability rather than bandwidth.

Can I use IPTV on mobile data?

Yes. 4G and 5G both work well. Watch your data allowance — 4K uses roughly 7GB per hour.
